Story behind Mortens Aften

Saint Morten was appointed bishop in Tours on July 4, 371 AD. The well-known legend states that Morten out of humility did not wish to become bishop and so he hid in between geese to avoid the appointment. The honks of the geese however, betrayed him and it is said that after Morten was made bishop, he demanded that the geese should be punished for betraying him – this should be done by eating them once a year. The oldest known Danish source, describing this event, was written in 1616 but similar German sources have been found, dating back to the 16th century, as well in Denmark, geese of Morten has been eaten before 1616.
